Wordless Wednesday ~ June 25, 2014

I broke with tradition this week and posted a photo that I did not take. There is a special reason for this: this picture was on my Mom's memory card, taken by her shortly before she died on June 12th. It is a view taken from outside her apartment building and it's a reminder to me that my Mom was the person who inspired me early on in my love for photography. I think she did a wonderful job of capturing the busy and interesting harbour of Burrard Inlet.

  1. Allison, what a moving post (in so many ways!). It is wonderful to have this glimpse of your Mom's eye and mind at work so keenly, even so shortly before leaving us. And what MOVEMENT she caught! The beautiful three-masted schooner with the cruise ship behind, both heading into harbour … and what looks like a second cruise ship in hot pursuit -- against the rugged "mast-head" of the cranes on the far side of the harbour. A terrific shot and a lovely tribute to irrepressible Blanche Howard. Thank you.

  2. What a lovely choice to share today. Not only a spectacular photo but a glimpse into the thoughts of your mum, the imagining of what she might have been thinking as she looked out that window and took this shot. Talk about a writing prompt...
    Thank you for this.

  3. A magnificent photo and tribute to your mom, Allison! A busy harbour yes, but I love the majestic sail ship in the foreground gliding in serenity and grace past seemingly oblivious to all the "hub bub" on shore.

  5. An elegant shot, Allison. Love the schooner's majesty as glides by and eclipses everything in the background. I didn't realize Blanche also took photographs -- she had a good eye. What a treasure, to have her memory card and see her creative mind at work so recently. It's a touching tribute, indeed.

    1. Yes, my Mom always had her camera in hand Allyson. I'm not sure how much other family members appreciated it, but I sure did. As a child I poured over her albums which were always up to date and I developed a fascination, perhaps an obsession with photographs as a result. In later years I could always count on her appreciation of, and feedback on my pictures and she had several hanging on her walls and never failed to point them out to whoever visited.

  6. Oh, Allison, what a lovely photo, and how deeply moving to know the story behind it!
    I hope this is not too cliché but it reminded me of this poem:

    Sea Fever
    John Masefield

    I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky,
    And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by,
    And the wheel’s kick and the wind’s song and the white sail’s shaking,
    And a gray mist on the sea’s face, and a gray dawn breaking.

    I must down go to the seas again, for the call of the running tide
    Is a wild call and a clear call that may not be denied;
    And all I ask is a windy day with the white clouds flying,
    And the flung spray and the blown spume, and the sea-gulls crying.

    I must go down to the seas again, to the vagrant gypsy life,
    To the gull’s way and the whale’s way, where the wind’s like a whetted knife;
    And all I ask is a merry yarn from a laughing fellow-rover,
    And quiet sleep and a sweet dream when the long trick’s over.

  7. Not a cliche at all Elizabeth, in fact that's always been a favourite poem of mine and ironically my Dad used to recite it when I was a child. I hadn't remembered the author.
