Dying to know about the back story of this one. Did you find these lying there or are they yours?? I looked up "polka mass" on Bing and the general Catholic consensus seems to be that polka masses, along with disco, clown, and hip hop masses are profanities. In case you wondered.
ReplyDeleteGreat research Elizabeth! I would not have known that!
DeleteAnd this is an instrument you can, and do, play Allison? Looking forward to the back story!
ReplyDeleteThis reminds me of wonderful "grownup" parties my parents had, where they danced the polka round and round the staircase in our living room and it all seemed so ... grown up! Lovely.
ReplyDeleteOops looks as if my comment got lost. I said your picture reminds me of grownup parties my parents used to have where people polka-ed round and round the staircase in our living room and it all seemed so , well, grownup and exciting. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteThis is right up my street! I love it, for many reasons. And what a story might be concocted. First question: how did the album get into such poor shape and was it found abandoned, as it appears to be? Did it fall out of someone's grip en route TO a polka mass? [I hear the church is trying its darndest to attract new members...] Or by some strange circle-of-life coincidence might it actually BE one of the albums once played in Barbara's basement?? Now there's a story... (:
ReplyDeleteThanks for this, Allison.
And I love your new virtual home.
I notice you're missing my link. Here it is. Better late and all that... http://matildamagtree.wordpress.com/2013/06/05/wordless-wednesday-38/
ReplyDeletePolka "mass" ... now that's curious. Did you discover this at a garage sale, or discarded at the end of someone's driveway? I love your "found art" photography, Allison.
ReplyDeleteAs part of our 4-day journalism reunion weekend in Ottawa, tomorrow night is a BBQ and jam session with 12 of us who enjoy playing instruments and/or singing. We held a smaller version, with 8 of us, last summer, and my girlfriend's husband played accordion. He's amazing and can play accompaniment to absolutely anything, including rock, and pull it off. Someone as a joke had brought along an old album of polka standards -- we didn't listen to it, but took some goofy photos of people posing with it and the accordion. I'll have to show them your photo tomorrow!
I'm not sure why some of the links below your photo aren't working, Allison. My photo is the latest post at www.allysonlatta.ca
ReplyDeleteThis is terrific! Makes one think, makes one laugh, then makes one wonder if one ought to have! Fabulous, Allison.
ReplyDeleteOoops I see I'm commenting on last week's picture. I wonder how I did that. Ah well. I'll fact the captcha again. B.
